Completing a 25-year compositional arc, saxophonist-composer m: Patrick Zimmerli releases his new jazz suite Clockworks (Songlines) following the release in 2016 of his first quartet's 1992 recording Shores Against Silence (with m: Kevin Hays, m: Larry Grenadier and m: Tom Rainey). Both records feature rhythmically and melodically advanced composition largely inspired by Zimmerli's love of serial composers such as Babbitt, Carter, Stockhausen and Boulez, though still grounded in a jazz ethos. Both explore a different third stream direction in jazz that Zimmerli made his own right from the start, and that for all its complexities compels attention first and foremost as music to be listened to...

The Bossa Nova All Stars put their stamp on the sultry sound of Brazil's most popular musical export on Saturday, March 31 in Venice FL, where they focused almost entirely on the extensive songbook of composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. Jobim was one of the pioneers of bossa nova, a late 1950s fusion of the Brazilian samba and jazz. His contributions to the art form were mighty and are best known. The focus wasn't really surprising, considering that the singer featured in this program, Brazilian native Maucha Adnet, worked with Jobim for the final decade of his career. 'A trumpeter and composer of penetrating insight.' -- Nate Chinen, The New York Times Legendary composer and trumpeter m: Wadada Leo Smith presents the Second Annual e: CREATE Festival in New Haven, CT, a two-day celebration and exploration of his inventive and unclassifiable music that will feature world or US premiere performances of four new suites. Taking place Saturday, April 7 and Sunday, April 8, 2018 at e: Firehouse 12, 45 Crown Street, New Haven, CT, the festival will include performances by five separate ensembles over two evenings and include an exhibit of Smith's Ankhrasmation Symbolic Language Scores.
